Oral Surgery and Orthodontic Treatment

With local orthodontics in Edmonton, oral surgery is occasionally required to help with such aspects as exposure of impacted tooth, removal of the tooth, and/or correction of significant jaw imbalances. Orthognathic surgery, also known as corrective jaw surgery, addresses abnormalities of facial bones encompassing jaws and teeth. These abnormalities are often associated with impediments of speech, chewing, sleeping, and other oral functions. These problems can all be corrected by orthodontic treatment in combination with orthognathic surgery with additional benefits of improved facial balance and smile esthetics.

Presently, modern digital imaging technology and computerized treatment planning minimize the overall treatment times, periods of recovery, and the overall efficacy of the oral surgery. The predictability of the treatment is also significantly improved by the state-of-the-art stabilizing materials such as micro-screws and titanium plates. These major advances in surgical technology and procedures have reduced the post-surgical recovery time so that patients can comfortably return to their normal routines soon after the procedure.

Orthognathic surgery might not be necessary if orthodontic treatment alone can correct the problem. With modern orthodontic techniques, such as Wilckodontics (Periodontally Accelerated Orthodontics) and other advances, this can sometimes be the case. During your consultation with Dr.Sileikyte, we will be able to determine if oral surgery is necessary in your case.
