Clear Aligners / Clear Braces
Clear aligners use a series of transparent, removable, and comfortable trays to gradually straighten your smile. Because the clear aligners are nearly invisible, most people won’t even notice you’re wearing them. One of the main advantages of clear aligners is that they can be taken out during meals, so you can eat and drink without restrictions. They also make brushing and flossing easier compared to traditional braces. With no metal components, clear aligners offer a smooth and comfortable fit, reducing the chances of irritation inside the mouth during your clear aligner treatment.

Ceramic Braces
Clear ceramic brackets and braces are composed of translucent materials, which renders them less conspicuous on the teeth than metal braces. As a result, they are primarily used to address aesthetic concerns in teenagers and adults. Although they are less noticeable, clear ceramic braces require more significant attention to oral hygiene, as they are larger in size. One disadvantage of ceramic braces is that they are more delicate, and the elastic ties can become discolored between orthodontic appointments due to certain foods and smoking.

Self-Ligating Braces
Self-ligating braces utilize the same materials as traditional braces but don’t require elastic ties. This feature means that there are fewer appointments and less friction placed on the teeth. They are available in traditional metal, ceramic, or clear brackets and are the same size as metal braces. However, self-ligating braces use a specialized clip instead of elastic ties to guide the arch wire into place, reducing the amount of pressure on the teeth. They require fewer adjustments because there are no elastic ties to replace.

Metal Braces / Traditional Braces
Currently, traditional metal braces represent the most prevalent type of braces in use. These orthodontic braces are now smaller, more comfortable, and made of high-grade metal alloys. Patients can choose to add colored elastics (rubber bands) to their braces, resulting in a distinctive and colorful smile.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will I have to wear my braces?
The time you need braces will vary based on the alignment of your teeth. The normal timeline is between 12 and 24 months, depending on your individual needs.
Will braces hurt my teeth?
In general, patients might feel some discomfort for a couple of days after the procedure. In these cases, over-the-counter medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen may be taken for relief. After that, it is less common to experience dental soreness. If you do feel any discomfort or tooth pain, especially after adjustments related to clear braces, please reach out to us at our office at 780-432-0367.
How can I clean my braces?
Cleaning braces that are fixed, as opposed to removable braces, can be a bit more involved during your treatment. The good news is that once you start doing it, you’ll find it’s no problem at all! We recommend you brush and floss your teeth at least four times a day.
Use a soft toothbrush and a fluoride-based toothpaste to help clear out those hard-to-reach areas. When you floss, make sure to stand in front of a mirror and take your time. It’s important to clean around the braces to make sure plaque doesn’t build up.
After you come in to get your braces placed on, we can show you the easiest way to floss around your new braces treatment.
What can I eat with braces?
While you can still enjoy many types of foods after you get braces, there will be certain kinds of foods that will be best not to eat.
You should avoid the following after getting braces:
- Sticky foods like gummy bears or chewing gum
- Crunchy foods like nuts or popcorn
- Chewy foods like bagels or pretzels
- Hard-to-bite fruits and vegetables, like apples and corn on the cob
Will my insurance help cover my orthodontic costs?
